Well Pressure Tank Replacement Costs and Tank Sizing

Compare published installed tank rates, mobilization and manufacturer drawdown figures, with the diagnosis and fittings a replacement quote should include.

A well pressure-tank replacement price should buy a diagnosed repair, a selected tank and a working connection to the existing system. Nominal tank capacity alone cannot show whether the replacement reduces pump cycling. The pressure range, usable drawdown, pump flow and installation space matter together.

Two primary sources help separate price from sizing. Minnesota publishes installed tank lines in Thein Well’s public procurement schedule, while Amtrol publishes current Well-X-Trol specifications. The procurement document’s active term and household availability have not been confirmed here. Its rates illustrate the billing structure; a local estimate establishes today’s installed price and the scope for the property.

Key figures

  • $1,000 Minnesota contract: installed 34-gallon pressure tank, mobilization extra
  • $1,450 Minnesota contract: installed 62-gallon pressure tank, mobilization extra
  • 9.1 gallons WX-205 usable drawdown at 40/60 psi settings

An installed tank line still has a scope boundary

The state schedule lists a 34-gallon WX-205 or equivalent at $1,000 installed and a 62-gallon WX-251 or equivalent at $1,450 installed. Necessary fittings are included in those entries. It separately lists $550 nondrilling mobilization per project. Restoration and unusual work require their own scope.

These published contract references are not confirmed current homeowner prices or a national range. The installation entries include necessary fittings; the schedule charges mobilization separately. Confirm which billing arrangement a current quote uses.

Do not add a retail tank price on top of an installation line that already supplies the tank. Conversely, a labor-only estimate leaves equipment outside its number. Ask the provider to identify the tank model, fittings, removal of the old tank, commissioning and any work outside the existing connection.

A larger tank raises this reference example by $450, but paying the difference is sensible only when the selected drawdown and site layout support the system. That price difference does not establish that the larger model is necessary for every household, nor does it price rebuilding a cramped installation to fit it.

Drawdown is smaller than the number on the tank

Amtrol’s March 2026 specification card lists usable drawdown at several pressure settings. At 40/60 psi, the 20-gallon WX-202 provides 5.4 gallons, the 34-gallon WX-205 provides 9.1 gallons and the 62-gallon WX-251 provides 16.6 gallons. The nominal shell volume is not the water delivered between pump starts.

For the same WX-205, published drawdown is 10.5 gallons at 30/50 psi, 9.1 at 40/60 and 8.0 at 50/70. That change helps explain why selecting a tank by nominal gallons without recording the controls can produce the wrong expectation. These are specifications, not instructions to change household pressure settings.

At a hypothetical constant 10-gallon-per-minute pump delivery, refilling 9.1 gallons with no simultaneous household demand would take about 0.91 minute, or 54.6 seconds. Refilling 16.6 gallons under the same simplified assumptions would take 1.66 minutes, or 99.6 seconds. Flow in a working well can vary; these examples are not measured run times or a sizing prescription.

Ask the installer to show the sizing calculation against the pump manufacturer’s cycling and runtime requirements. Someone quoting a different brand should provide that tank’s drawdown chart. A model described as equivalent requires a performance comparison, not only the same gallon label on a carton.

Diagnosis decides whether the tank is the failed part

Record the symptom before ordering equipment: rapid starts, pressure swings, a loss of water, a control problem or visible leakage. Tell the contractor when it occurs and whether recent plumbing or well work preceded it. Those observations help define the service call without assuming a cause.

A leak elsewhere can make a pump cycle even when the tank remains sound. A faulty control or other system problem can also leave a new tank working alongside the original fault. Ask what the diagnosis found and what test supports replacement, then obtain a separate explanation for any proposed pump or electrical work.

The private-well testing guide addresses water quality, which a pressure tank does not certify. The well UV guide concerns treatment performance and flow. Neither treatment nor a laboratory result substitutes for diagnosing the pumping system.

Physical access can change the installation price

Amtrol lists the WX-205 at 22 inches in diameter and 30 inches high, and the WX-251 at the same diameter but 47 inches high. A tank that fits the floor area may still conflict with shelves, pipework or access for future service. Measure the installation space through the contractor rather than choosing only from a product photograph.

Discuss the route into and out of the room, access to the connection and removal of the old equipment. A basement stairway or narrow utility enclosure can change labor without changing the tank specification. A tank with more drawdown does not automatically fit where a smaller unit stood.

Tap flow is an observable symptom to describe during diagnosis. A photograph cannot establish the pump's delivery rate, the tank's drawdown or the pressure-control settings.

Identify which valves, gauge, control and connection changes are included. Some fittings are part of an installed package; others replace a failed component found during diagnosis. Require a reason for each additional line so that included fittings are not charged twice and an unrelated problem is not hidden in a vague upgrade allowance.

Commissioning and water testing close the repair

The handover should record the model and control settings, show the system operating through its cycle and identify any unresolved condition. Ask how the installer checks for leaks and confirms the pump’s operation. Keep the equipment warranty and labor warranty separate because their coverage and contact points can differ.

EPA recommends testing a private well after repairs to the well system. Ask the contractor and local health authority what testing follows this work, where a sample should come from and whether sampling or laboratory fees are included. A pressure test answers a mechanical question; it does not demonstrate that drinking water is free of contamination.

Pressure and electricity require controlled service

Arrange a well professional to diagnose and service the system. Do not dismantle pressurized equipment or work on energized controls; a tank cost guide is not a procedure for changing air charge or electrical settings.

Use the well and septic care budget to separate this one-time repair from routine testing and consumables. The final comparison should show what each quote diagnoses, installs and verifies. A low equipment number is only one part of restoring reliable service.

Questions people ask

Does a 34-gallon tank deliver 34 gallons before the pump starts?

No. Amtrol lists 9.1 gallons of drawdown for the WX-205 at 40/60 psi. Usable drawdown depends on the model and pressure range.

Is $1,550 a current residential replacement quote?

It combines two lines from a public procurement schedule. The contract term, retail availability and the property's scope have not been confirmed; obtain a current local estimate.

Will a new tank always stop rapid pump cycling?

Only if the diagnosed problem is corrected. Leaks, controls and other pumping-system faults can remain after a tank replacement.

Can the bigger tank use the same space?

Check the model dimensions, connections and service access. The cited 62-gallon WX-251 is 47 inches high, versus 30 inches for the 34-gallon WX-205.
