A mower that will not start is not automatically worn out. A fuel-system problem, drive fault or damaged deck can produce very different repair bills. The useful comparison begins with a diagnosis and a total for bringing the mower back into service, then a replacement that can perform the same job.
The published examples here are Dad Fix It’s 2026 service prices and Toro’s own product and fuel guidance, checked in October 2026. They are named offers, not national average repair fees or a guarantee that another shop will service the mower at the same price.
Key figures
- $80 Dad Fix It diagnostic fee, credited toward repair
- $65 per hour Dad Fix It general labor per hour
Diagnosis and transport can be separate charges
Dad Fix It serves Auburn, Georgia, and surrounding communities. Its price sheet lists $65 per hour for labor, $80 for diagnosis and $50 flat for pickup and return. It says diagnosis is applied toward an approved repair. If the repair proceeds, confirm how that credit appears rather than adding the same fee twice.
If the household declines repair after collection, the $80 diagnosis and $50 transport would total $130 under those listed terms. That spending may still answer whether a larger repair is sensible, but it does not purchase a working mower. Ask when payment is due and whether any minimum repair charge applies.
| Dad Fix It’s published service | Listed charge | Main cost boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Diagnosis | $80 | Credited toward repair |
| Pickup and return | $50 flat | Separate transport |
| General labor | $65 per hour | Parts additional |
| Basic push-mower tune-up | $75 labor | Oil, plug, filter care and other listed work; parts extra |
| Full push-mower tune-up | $110 labor | Broader cleaning and inspection; parts extra |
| Self-propelled tune-up | $130 labor | Includes listed drive-system attention |
| Basic riding-mower tune-up | $150 labor | Larger machine and two-blade work described |
| Full riding-mower tune-up | $195 labor | Broader deck and safety inspection |
Source note: Dad Fix It’s own price sheet marked effective 2026, checked in October 2026. The provider states that labor excludes parts and that it services gas equipment, not electric or battery-powered mowers. Its separate comparison ranges are not used as its own fees.
An electric mower’s battery or control-system quote cannot be inferred from those gas-mower rates. Ask whether the shop handles the model and battery platform before arranging collection. A shop unable to service the machine may still charge for travel or inspection under its terms.
A repair subtotal includes parts and the diagnostic credit
Suppose a repair quote totals $75 of labor and $25 of parts. Those hypothetical parts make $100, and the listed $50 transport makes the delivered repair total $150. If the shop credits an already paid $80 diagnostic deposit against that $100 repair, only the remaining $20 repair balance is due; the deposit is not another $80 on top.
Confirm that accounting with the shop. A separately quoted repair, a diagnostic deposit and a completed tune-up may overlap. An estimate with three lines does not mean all three must be added without a credit. Request the payable total and the approval limit before work begins.
Dad Fix It’s price sheet also lists examples of individual jobs, including $55 labor for a push-mower carburetor cleaning on the machine and $45 labor for a push-mower drive-belt replacement. Parts and other work can still add cost. A nonstarting mower is not assumed to require a carburetor simply because that repair appears on a price page.
The lawn-aeration guide separates another lawn-service budget. Keep contractor work and mower repair distinct so a temporary mowing problem does not get buried inside an unrelated yard package.
Replacement prices should match the mower’s job
Toro’s model 21462 page displays $539 for a twenty-two-inch Recycler with Personal Pace drive and a 163cc Briggs & Stratton EXi gas engine. It directs buyers to a local dealer because the model is not available online. Confirm availability, selling price, tax and delivery rather than treating the web figure as a delivered local offer.
Against that $539 example, a $150 repair total leaves $389 of initial-price difference. A $320 delivered repair would leave $219. That arithmetic does not establish that repairing is always better: a damaged structure, unavailable parts or another known fault can change the expected value of keeping the mower.
The cited service provider also publishes refurbished push-mower offers of $150–$350 and self-propelled offers of $250–$500, with a stated thirty-day mechanical warranty. Those depend on the machine available. Compare cutting width, drive, condition, collection and guarantee rather than treating any used push mower as equivalent to the named new Toro.
Expected seasons turn the comparison into a budget
For an illustration, assume a $150 repair allows two more seasons of service. That is $75 per season of repair spending. Assume instead that a $539 new mower provides five seasons: its purchase spending averages $107.80 per season. These lifetimes are assumptions, not manufacturer predictions.
If the repaired machine also requires an assumed $100 repair within those two seasons, the combined $250 becomes $125 per season. That exceeds the simple new-purchase example, although fuel, routine maintenance, resale and the new mower’s repairs are still excluded from both calculations.
Use the diagnosed condition to choose the expected seasons, and test a shorter life as well as an optimistic one. Age alone does not determine the result. A repair below fifty percent of a replacement price can still be poor value if it leaves serious faults unresolved; a larger repair may be defensible for a sound, more capable machine.
Engine instructions determine the maintenance routine
Toro’s page describes the cited EXi engine as requiring oil-level checks and topping off rather than routine oil changes. That feature belongs to the named engine. Do not copy it to another mower, or assume a tune-up package with an oil change is the prescribed service for every engine.
Toro’s fuel guidance calls for gasoline with at least an eighty-seven octane rating and no more than ten percent ethanol for its gas equipment. It also advises buying fuel that will be used within thirty days. These instructions help avoid a repeat fuel-related repair; they do not diagnose why a mower currently fails to start.
Follow the mower and engine manuals and have collision damage, fuel leaks, failed safety controls or structural defects assessed before operation. Do not bypass an interlock or work near a blade that could start; a low repair price does not establish safe operation.
The mowing-height guide covers cutting practice, while the lawn-service-or-DIY guide compares another way to keep mowing done. A temporary service visit can be a separate bridge while a mower is in the shop, rather than forcing a rushed replacement purchase.
Questions people ask
Should I add the $80 diagnosis to the approved repair?
The cited provider says it applies diagnosis toward repair. Confirm the credit and payable balance; adding a credited diagnostic payment again would overstate the total.
Are the tune-up prices all-in charges?
No. Dad Fix It's 2026 sheet says labor excludes parts. Transport is separately listed at $50, and the scope differs for push, self-propelled and riding mowers.
Is the cited $539 Toro immediately available online?
Its model 21462 page says online purchase is unavailable and directs buyers to a local dealer. Verify stock, local price, tax and delivery.
Is replacing always better when repair exceeds half the new price?
No universal percentage decides it. Compare diagnosed condition, further known work, expected seasons, parts availability and a replacement with similar capability.
