Wood Stove Glass Replacement Costs: Panel and Fitting

See a glass fabricator's $35 starting price, a worked installed-cost example and manufacturer specifications for the panel, gasket and cause of damage.

Wood-stove door glass replacement costs include more than the pane. The repair requires the specified panel, its seal, sound retaining hardware and a reason for the damage. A cheap glass order does not restore a door whose frame or attachment would crack the next panel as well.

One Day Glass publishes a wood-stove glass starting price of $35, checked October 2026. The finished price depends on the ordered dimensions, shape and material, with fitting outside that starting number. The appliance manufacturer’s requirements govern the choice; a generic fabricator’s product category is not approval for every stove model.

Key figures

  • from $35 One Day Glass custom stove panel, starting price
  • $248 Example: panel, gasket, labor and delivery
  • 5 mm Drolet Classic With Blower ceramic glass thickness

A starting panel price is not an installed repair quote

Ask whether the quoted number supplies glass only or includes removing the damaged panel, replacing its gasket, correcting hardware and checking the assembled door. Freight, tax and labor can sit outside a small advertised starting price. They should have their own stated boundary before the owner orders a part.

Source: One Day Glass’s own wood-stove glass product page for the $35 starting figure. The $95, $18, $120 and $15 allowances are hypothetical arithmetic, not published local labor rates or a national installed range. Obtain the selected panel price and the appliance-supported fitting scope before comparing offers.

Suppose another hypothetical installed offer is $230 and already includes the same panel, gasket, labor and delivery. Its total is $18 lower than the $248 example. If an offer is instead $200 but excludes the assumed $18 gasket and $15 delivery, it reaches $233 before tax, or $15 below the first example. The inclusions decide whether the figures are comparable.

Do not add the panel’s retail price to a provider’s supplied-and-installed quote. Likewise, do not count the $35 product starting figure as the price of the selected panel when its order has not been configured. A minimum advertised number is a lead into a quotation, not evidence that the appliance repair will cost that amount.

The stove model determines the panel specification

Provide the model and serial information, the manual and any original replacement-part number. A dealer or installer can identify whether the manufacturer supports a replacement panel, a door assembly or another arrangement. A photograph of an apparently similar stove cannot resolve that part selection.

Drolet’s Classic With Blower manual describes its door panel as 5 mm ceramic material. Its maintenance section directs owners to original replacement parts. That is a model-specific example from the published manual, not a standard thickness for every wood stove or approval for any panel labeled ceramic.

One Day Glass lists ceramic options at 1/8, 5/32 and 3/16 inch, including different colors and materials. The existence of those stock options does not establish that all are interchangeable in a stove door. Shape, edge treatment, curvature, coating and retaining arrangement can matter alongside thickness.

The wood-stove cost guide helps keep replacement components separate from a whole-appliance purchase. If the door assembly is damaged, a panel-only quote may leave the main repair outside its scope. Ask for the manufacturer’s supported option before pricing a custom piece.

Glass-ceramic ratings do not make window glass interchangeable

SCHOTT’s ROBAX technical information separates temperature/time performance from resistance to gradients and thermal shock. It gives 610°C, or 1,130°F, for 1,000 hours under the stated material conditions and short-term exposure up to 760°C, or 1,400°F. Those limits describe the glass-ceramic, not a temperature at which an owner should run the stove.

A maximum material temperature does not establish compatibility with a door, its gasket or a particular fuel appliance. Selection still follows the stove’s specified part and installation arrangement. A seller’s broad high-temperature claim is weaker evidence than the appliance’s part requirements.

Ordinary window glass and tempered safety glass are different materials. Do not turn a low window-repair price into a stove repair estimate. The stove clearance guide addresses another part of the appliance system; a new panel does not change the heater’s required clearances or certification.

The gasket and retainers can explain repeat breakage

Drolet’s manual identifies uneven placement and overtightened retaining screws as major causes of broken door glass. It also discusses the glass gasket and the separate door gasket. A replacement proposal should assess the support and seals rather than treating every crack as an isolated panel defect.

Ask the technician what the inspection found: contact with a log, damaged supports, a distorted door, failed seals or another condition. The quotation should identify any additional part required to correct that finding. A cause that remains unresolved can make the cheapest panel purchase a repeat expense.

The gasket around the glass cushions and seals its connection to the door. The door gasket seals the door to the stove body. A quote saying gasket replacement should identify which one it buys and whether the other is being checked. They are not automatically one interchangeable length of rope or tape.

Order accuracy and delivery affect the time without heat

The fabricator says most wood-stove glass orders ship in one to two days. That is a manufacturing and dispatch statement, not a guaranteed arrival or repair date. A shaped order, transport, the dealer’s part verification and a fitting appointment can extend the period before service is restored.

Ask who takes responsibility for the dimensions and the supported material. Distinguish the pane size from the visible opening in the door; the edge retained by the assembly can sit outside the visible area. Do not guess the order from a photograph or measure a hot, damaged assembly as part of a cost comparison.

Keep the approved part or drawing, order details and delivery condition record. Ask about custom-order returns and freight damage before purchasing. A bespoke panel that cannot be returned carries a different ordering risk from an identified manufacturer replacement stocked by the installer.

The handover should confirm the repaired assembly

Request an invoice identifying the installed panel and gasket, any hardware correction and the checks performed after fitting. Ask when the appliance can return to service under its instructions. If an adhesive or other repair material requires a wait, the installer should give the product-specific return-to-use instruction.

Keep product and fitting warranties distinct. A glass supplier’s coverage does not automatically include a contractor’s labor or damage from unsupported installation. Ask how a future crack would be assessed and who receives a claim rather than assuming that the pane’s material rating promises immunity from impact or assembly damage.

A damaged viewing panel takes the stove out of service

Follow the appliance’s shutdown instructions and arrange a supported repair. Drolet’s cited manual says not to use the stove with broken glass. Do not operate with a damaged or removed panel or substitute household glass; keep people away from hot surfaces and broken pieces.

If damage followed an overheating or chimney event, the inspection-report guide helps define the broader assessment. Replacing the visible panel alone cannot clear unrelated damage. Compare the identified part, corrected cause, fitting and handover together when deciding whether a quote restores the appliance.

Questions people ask

Will a $35 glass purchase finish the repair?

The cited figure is a custom product starting price. The selected panel, gaskets, freight, fitting and any damaged supports require their own scope and price.

Can tempered window glass replace stove glass?

Use the material and part specified for the appliance. A tempered safety pane is not interchangeable with the glass-ceramic required by a wood-stove door.

Does every wood stove use 5 mm glass?

The cited Drolet Classic With Blower manual specifies that thickness for its panel. Identify the requirements of the installed model rather than extending the example to all stoves.

Why might replacement glass crack again?

The support, seals, placement, retaining pressure or an unresolved damage cause can matter. Ask the installer to diagnose and correct the cause alongside replacing the panel.
