Repair makes sense when a service visit identifies an affordable fault and leaves the rest of the pump in sound condition. Replacement becomes more persuasive when several components are failing, parts are unavailable or an installed upgrade brings documented operating savings. The useful comparison is a diagnosed repair total against a compatible replacement total, not a motor repair bill against a boxed pump’s shelf price.
Doheny lists its own-brand above-ground variable-speed pump, SKU 90200 and MPN 72535, at $451.99 in October 2026. That is a real equipment price, but it does not buy installation or establish what an in-ground pool pump should cost. The published model is a 1HP unit operating at 115V, and the company says it cannot ship this item to California.
Key figures
- $451.99 Doheny's SKU 90200 above-ground pump, California shipping excluded
- $20 ENERGY STAR certified above-ground pump yearly saving estimate
- 115V Doheny's SKU 90200 electrical supply requirement
Repairability depends on what has failed
A leak at a replaceable seal, a damaged lid or a failed motor can lead to different repair scopes. Ask for the diagnosed component, the condition of the remaining housing and drive, and the parts the technician can obtain. An estimate for replacing only a motor should explain what remains old and which components receive a warranty.
Do not identify a motor failure from noise alone. Restricted flow, suction-side problems, a controller fault or a worn pump component can produce overlapping symptoms. Describe what happened and obtain a diagnosis before purchasing parts. The pool filter replacement guide covers another system component whose condition can affect flow without making the pump itself defective.
Ask whether a diagnostic charge is retained if you decline the repair and whether it is credited if you authorize service. Also ask whether the quoted work includes seals, electrical reconnection, plumbing changes and commissioning. A parts-only price can look inexpensive until those lines are added.
A manufacturer price is an equipment benchmark
| Published specification or price | Figure | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Doheny own-brand VS above-ground pump | $451.99 | Sale price for SKU 90200 |
| Displayed comparison price | $564.99 | Listing reference price, not a second installation quote |
| Motor designation | 1HP | Not a substitute for checking pump hydraulics |
| Supply | 115V | Compatibility with the installation needs confirmation |
| ECO preset | 1,500RPM | A selectable setting, not a universal filtration prescription |
| CLEAN preset | 2,400RPM | Another published speed option |
| BOOST preset | 3,250RPM | Higher preset; flow still depends on the system |
Source: Doheny’s own product listing, checked October 2026. This is an above-ground equipment price; installation, tax, handling, electrical work and final compatibility are separate. No ENERGY STAR certification is inferred from the words “variable speed.”
The price difference on the listing is $113, but that sale does not create $113 in savings versus your existing pump. A model that cannot serve your plumbing, electrical supply or location is not a valid alternative. Compare quotes for the same pool and operating requirements, including heater, cleaner and other equipment that depends on pump flow.
Motor horsepower is only part of that assessment. The replacement proposal should identify a pump that delivers the required flow against the resistance of the installed plumbing and filter. Ask for the selected model and the basis for the operating settings, rather than accepting a larger horsepower number as proof of a better replacement.
Installed costs change the repair decision
Consider a hypothetical comparison: a diagnosed repair costs $350, while a compatible replacement costs $850 installed. The extra cash required to replace is $500. If the replacement prevents $100 of annual electricity costs under the same required pool service, the simple incremental payback is 5 years. If savings are $50, it becomes 10 years; at $20, it becomes 25 years.
Those dollar amounts are examples, not national prices or promises of pump life. They show why an operating-cost claim needs a denominator. The full replacement cost may include removing the old unit, modifying unions or fittings, reconnection, permits where required, control setup and testing. Ask which of those are included before comparing it with a repair.
For a second equipment example, the published $451.99 pump plus hypothetical $200 installation and $75 plumbing work produces $726.99 before tax and checkout fees. If an installer supplies that pump, its invoiced equipment price may differ from the online listing. A contractor can charge for sourcing and warranty handling; the quote should make the total visible.
Electricity savings depend on the comparison pump
ENERGY STAR’s current consumer page says a pool pump can cost as much as $310 a year to operate. It lists certified in-ground pumps at 20% less energy than standard pumps, with approximately $50 yearly savings, and certified above-ground pumps at 11% less energy, with about $20 savings. These are program comparisons, not measured savings for a named home.
An older single-speed installation may offer a different opportunity from replacing a recent efficient pump. Do not select the largest marketing percentage from another comparison and apply it to your bill. ENERGY STAR also explains that reducing pump speed by half can reduce power sharply, but pool service, system resistance and operating requirements constrain the settings that can be used.
A metered example is easier to evaluate. If old operation uses 1,200kWh per year and the proposed schedule uses 700kWh while meeting the same pool requirements, the difference is 500kWh. At an assumed $0.20/kWh, that is $100 annually. The technician’s projected consumption should be linked to speed and operating hours, not just a percentage on a brochure. See pool running costs for separating pumping from heating and water expenses.
Use trained pool service personnel for diagnosis and installation. Do not open a drive, loosen pressurized equipment or defeat safety controls to investigate a fault. Pentair’s cited user guide restricts installation and service to trained personnel; it does not provide a homeowner repair shortcut.
Warranty scope and future repairs belong in the choice
Read the remaining warranty before authorizing paid work. A manufacturer may cover a failed part while labor, travel or other components remain chargeable. A repair warranty can cover the replaced motor without extending coverage to an aging housing or drive. The FTC advises reading the claim process and exclusions before treating warranty length as protection against every future bill.
Ask the technician which remaining components are already worn and what parts availability looks like for the existing model. Separate observed condition from predictions: an old pump does not automatically fail next month, and a new unit has no guaranteed trouble-free life. The contractor estimate guide helps record the equipment, included work and callback terms before paying.
Questions people ask
Is a $451.99 pump cheaper than repairing mine?
Only after compatibility and the installed total are compared. The cited price is an above-ground Doheny model before labor and other charges; it cannot establish the cost of every replacement.
Does a variable-speed pump automatically qualify for rebates?
No. Check the selected model's certification and your utility's current terms. A product description alone does not prove ENERGY STAR qualification or rebate eligibility.
Should I replace only the motor?
That depends on the diagnosed fault, housing and drive condition, parts availability and the repair total. Ask what remains old and what the repair warranty covers.
How is replacement payback calculated?
Divide the extra replacement cost over repair by the annual operating savings. A labeled $500 premium and $100 annual saving produce 5 years, without predicting equipment life.
