What It Takes to Keep Deer Out of a Garden

Deer clear ordinary fences with ease. Why eight feet is the usual minimum, what cheaper electric and double-fence designs do, and when sprays are enough.

Once deer find a garden they come back every night. A four-foot fence that stops dogs and rabbits barely slows them down.

Stopping deer is a question of height, design and how hungry the local herd is.

Why eight feet

The University of Illinois Extension puts it plainly: deer are excellent jumpers, so fences need to be at least eight feet high. That is the standard figure across extension guidance for a single, physical barrier.

The fence also has to reach the ground. Deer will push under a loose bottom edge rather than jump.

Cheaper designs that still work

Electric fencing is the most common alternative to a tall fence. Illinois Extension mentions it as an option if you do not want to build a fortress. Many gardeners bait the wire with a smear of peanut butter on foil so deer learn the fence by touch.

A double fence uses two lower fences set a few feet apart. Deer are reluctant to jump when they cannot see a clear landing space. It suits gardens where tall fencing is not allowed.

When repellents are enough

If deer visit only occasionally, repellent sprays and moving scare devices can protect a small garden. Rotate products, reapply after rain, and start before deer form a habit. Under heavy pressure, only a fence works reliably.

Check the rules before you build

Many towns and HOAs limit fence height in residential yards. Electric fencing may also be restricted. Ask before you buy materials.

Questions people ask

How high can deer jump?

High enough that extension guidance recommends fences of at least eight feet for a single physical barrier.

Will a six-foot fence keep deer out?

Sometimes, especially around a small, enclosed garden where deer cannot see a landing space. Under heavy pressure it often fails.

Do deer repellents work?

They can reduce damage under light pressure. Deer adapt, so rotate products and reapply after rain.

What plants do deer avoid?

Strongly scented herbs and plants with fuzzy or tough leaves are browsed less, but hungry deer will eat almost anything.
