A leaking faucet is worth repairing when the failed part is available, the fixture body and mounting remain sound and the repair leaves a faucet you want to keep. Replacement makes more sense when the body is damaged, parts cannot be obtained or the existing fixture has other known problems that the repair would leave behind.
The price of a cartridge is not the price of a service visit. Moen’s own store lists its 1225 at $30.04 when checked in October 2026. Desert Water Plumbing & Rooter’s Arizona rate page advertises cartridge repair or replacement from $225 and faucet replacement from $285. These figures describe different purchases and do not establish a nationwide installed average.
Water beneath a kitchen sink can also come from the garbage disposal and its connections. Identify the leaking component before ordering a faucet; replacing the fixture will not fix a disposal-body leak.

The leak source identifies the part that can solve it
Water at a faucet handle, water at the base and a drip from the spout can lead to different work. Water under the sink may instead involve a supply connection, shutoff valve or drain. Record where you observed it without dismantling the fixture or declaring that a cartridge is the answer.
Moen’s bathroom-handle guidance explains that a cartridge controls flow and is a common cause of leakage around the handle in its faucets. It directs owners to model identification and replacement-parts information. That is a manufacturer-specific diagnostic route, not proof that the same cartridge fits every single-handle fixture.
Have the estimate name the faucet model, the diagnosed component and any nearby work. If the fixture is sound but the cartridge has failed, a targeted repair can preserve the sink and finish. If the problem is a damaged body or a supply valve that will not operate, buying a cartridge alone leaves another bill.
The drain-service guide distinguishes a blocked line from a fixture problem. A slow drain and a dripping faucet can coexist, but paying to replace one does not automatically fix the other.
A part listing and a service quote have different boundaries

| Moen 1225 cartridge | $30.04 | Part from the manufacturer’s store |
| Moen 1225 list-price reference | $44.85 | Comparison reference, not the current sale subtotal |
| Desert Water cartridge repair/replacement | From $225 | Local starting service price |
| Desert Water faucet replacement | From $285 | Local starting replacement service price |
Sources: Moen’s own 1225 store listing and Desert Water Plumbing & Rooter’s own rate page, checked October 2026. Confirm stock, compatibility, the proposed faucet, parts and job exclusions. The service provider describes installation, tax and credit-card fees as included in its pricing; these are starting amounts, not offers for every fixture.
The two Moen price fields differ by $14.81. Do not use that list-price difference as an energy or water saving, or quote an older search-result price in place of the live store amount. It is simply the difference between the listing’s comparison reference and displayed selling price.
The service prices differ by $60 at their starting points. Ask whether the proposed replacement faucet is supplied and which model is included. A labor-only replacement figure can look close to a repair package while leaving the new fixture, delivery and extra connections outside the comparison.
A hypothetical owner-supplied job shows the arithmetic: the $30.04 part plus assumed $120 labor gives $150.04 before shipping, tax and other work. If labor rises to an assumed $180, it becomes $210.04. Neither assumed labor figure is a published rate. The part’s price alone cannot establish that either job is available locally.
Compatibility and warranty determine whether the part is a bargain
Use the manufacturer’s parts diagram or identification process rather than matching a cartridge by color or appearance. A similar-looking part can have different dimensions or control behavior. Confirm whether the faucet uses the proposed component and whether another seal or handle part is also needed.
Moen’s support page distinguishes faucet and parts warranties and directs owners to the terms. Contact the manufacturer with the model and purchase information before ordering. A covered part can reduce the materials bill, but it does not automatically establish free labor from a separate service company or coverage for adjacent plumbing.
Ask what happens if the removed part reveals damage to the body or if the replacement does not stop the leak. Agree on a price or approval boundary for further work. That avoids paying for a first attempt and then authorizing replacement without knowing how the first invoice is treated.
The contractor estimate checklist helps record those stages. The estimate should state whether diagnosis is included, whether a fee is credited and what testing and callback terms follow the repair.
Water loss strengthens the case for fixing the leak
EPA’s Fix a Leak guidance says a faucet dripping once per second can waste more than 3,000 gallons annually. It is a benchmark for a particular drip rate, not a measurement of every leak. A damp cabinet can also create a damage problem that a gallons-based calculation does not capture.
For a conservative illustration using 3,000 gallons, an assumed combined variable water and sewer rate of $10 per 1,000 gallons produces $30 per year. At an assumed $20 rate it is $60. Use the variable charges on the household bill; a fixed monthly account charge does not disappear when the leak stops.
Repair and replacement that both stop the same drip deliver the same avoided leak in that comparison. A more expensive replacement cannot claim the whole $30 or $60 annual saving as its advantage over a repair that would also stop the water loss. Compare the extra cost with extra benefits, such as better controls or lower flow during use.
Flow efficiency does not always require a new faucet
EPA says WaterSense-labeled bathroom faucets and accessories use at most 1.5 gallons per minute, compared with 2.2 gallons per minute for a standard faucet, reducing flow by 30% or more. Those criteria concern bathroom sink products, not every kitchen faucet or an unrestricted guarantee of whole-home water savings.
If an otherwise serviceable bathroom fixture accepts a compatible labeled accessory, investigate that option before attributing every efficiency benefit to full replacement. Compatibility, water pressure and the way the tap is used matter. A flow limit is also different from stopping a leak while the faucet is off.
Replacement adds mounting and access questions
For replacement, identify the sink’s mounting holes, deck thickness and access underneath. Ask whether the selected faucet, drain assembly and connections fit the existing arrangement. A wall-mounted fixture, seized hardware or a damaged shutoff valve can expand the work beyond a routine swap.
Use the bathroom remodel cost guide if the job also changes the sink or surrounding surface. Keep that larger project separate from the decision to restore a working faucet. A cosmetic upgrade can be worthwhile without being disguised as the only solution to a replaceable seal.
Avoid using a leaking fixture that is wetting the cabinet or surrounding structure. If the shutoff, plumbing or safe access is uncertain, have the leak assessed before disassembly. A failed connection and damaged surfaces need their own repair scope.
Questions people ask
Does a $30.04 cartridge mean a $30.04 repair?
No. That is Moen's listed part price. Diagnosis, labor, shipping, tax and any other components depend on the job, and compatibility has to be confirmed.
Is replacing the faucet only $60 more?
The cited provider's two starting prices differ by $60. Confirm the selected fixture and each service's inclusions before comparing final installed totals.
Does every faucet use the Moen 1225?
No. Use the manufacturer's model identification and parts information. The example price is not a recommendation to fit that cartridge to an unidentified faucet.
Will a new faucet save more than a repair?
Both can stop the same leak. A replacement may also change flow during use, but only that additional benefit belongs in the comparison of its price premium over repair.
