Drywall repair costs depend on the finish you are buying, not just the size of the hole. A patch can end with joint compound, texture, primer or a repainted wall. Those stages require different work, and drying can bring the worker back on another day. Two bids described simply as “repair drywall” can therefore cover very different results.
Show-Me Home Repairs’ published August 2026 rates offer a local labor example: $70 for a service call that includes the first hour, then $70 per hour billed in half-hour increments. That is a real provider’s labor schedule in Johnson County, Missouri. It is not a per-hole price or a national installed rate, and the company prices larger projects by a separate flat bid.
Key figures
- $70 Example: one-hour drywall labor visit, materials extra
- $105 Example: 1.5-hour drywall labor visit, materials extra
- $140 Example: two-hour drywall labor visit, materials extra
The quote ends at an agreed finishing stage
Ask whether the job includes replacing damaged board, adding support, treating the joints, sanding, matching texture, priming and painting. For a small impact hole, the visible repair may be limited. A ceiling opened for plumbing work can require a larger patch and texture match. A wall with repeated movement or moisture needs the cause addressed before the surface is closed.
Use photographs and dimensions to describe the damage without enlarging the opening. Note whether it is a wall or ceiling and whether cabinets, a tall stairwell or occupied furniture affect access. The contractor should identify the repair area and the paint boundary separately, because one is usually not a reliable measure of the other.
The contractor estimate guide helps turn those stages into a scope. Ask who supplies paint and whether an existing can is enough for the agreed surface. A promise to “touch up” cannot guarantee that an aged finish will become invisible under every lighting condition.
Published billing rules help estimate labor
| Assumed visit or material purchase | Calculation from Show-Me’s rate card | Subtotal |
|---|---|---|
| 1-hour visit | First-hour service call | $70 |
| 1.5-hour visit | $70 + half of $70 | $105 |
| 2-hour visit | $70 + $70 | $140 |
| 3-hour visit | $70 + 2 × $70 | $210 |
| Supplies costing an assumed $50 | $50 × 1.15 | $57.50 |
| Assumed 2-hour visit plus those supplies | $140 + $57.50 | $197.50 |

The provider publishes a 15% material markup for sourcing and pickup. Ask for the material allowance and whether supplies you buy yourself change the warranty terms. A partly used carton of compound, a new sheet of board and the paint purchased for the job should not appear as an unexplained lump sum.
Hourly work also needs a limit or approval point. An estimate can state the expected time and require approval if inspection reveals a larger repair. That is more useful than interpreting the table as a guarantee that every small patch takes exactly the assumed hours.
Drying and separate visits affect the minimum bill
Several finishing stages may be separated by drying, according to the selected product and site conditions. Ask how many visits the quote assumes and whether each brings a new minimum charge. Fast-setting material does not automatically remove every drying or painting requirement, and a contractor should not promise a finished wall based on the hole size alone.
For an illustrative billing comparison, two separate visits lasting 45 minutes each would each fall inside a $70 first-hour service call, producing $140 labor. One continuous 1.5-hour visit at the published rate is $105. The $35 difference is a consequence of separate minimums, not evidence that drying can be skipped to reduce the bill.
Confirm whether return visits are already included in a flat patch price. If they are, adding another service call would count the work twice. Ask whether the company returns for sanding and painting or whether those stages are assigned to another contractor. The agreement should say when the repair is ready for the next stage.
Painting area can dwarf patch area
A hypothetical 2-by-2-foot patch covers 4 square feet. A 12-foot-wide wall with an 8-foot ceiling covers 96 square feet before openings. Repainting the wall therefore involves 24 times the patch’s surface area. That ratio is not a labor multiplier, but it explains why a paint-inclusive bid can be substantially larger than a board-and-compound bid.
Ask whether paint extends to a corner, the whole wall, adjacent walls or the ceiling. Texture and sheen also influence what remains visible. A contractor can describe the blending plan without promising that a repaired surface will look identical to every surrounding area. Agree on the acceptance boundary before work starts rather than discovering later that only the new board was painted.
If the surface was opened during another project, coordinate the trades. The bathroom fan replacement guide covers an installation that can leave a ceiling opening. Confirm who returns to close it and whether the ventilation quote already contains that cost.
Moisture and suspect old materials change the work
Drywall affected by a leak is not just a cosmetic repair. Ask what caused the wetting, whether it has stopped and how the replacement boundary was chosen. An allowance for opening more material is different from a fixed price for a known impact hole. Keep the moisture investigation separate so the new surface is not used to conceal an unresolved problem.
EPA says homes built before 1978 may have lead-based paint and recommends lead-safe certified contractors for renovation work in those homes. EPA also warns that asbestos-containing material cannot generally be identified by appearance and that improper sampling can release fibers. These concerns affect containment, assessment and disposal before cutting or sanding begins.
The first-day water damage guide covers immediate response to a leak. It does not make a drying contractor’s invoice equivalent to rebuilding and repainting a wall. A restoration estimate should identify which stage it covers and what remains for another trade.
Do not disturb suspected asbestos or sand suspect old coatings to inspect them. Arrange assessment and the required lead-safe or asbestos work before repair begins. Keep occupants away from a damaged or contaminated work area while obtaining instructions.
A small repair still benefits from a clear invoice
The FTC recommends comparing estimates that state work, materials, price and timing. For drywall, add the patch dimensions, access arrangement, number of visits and finishing stage. Ask how the company handles a crack that reappears and whether its guarantee concerns workmanship or also an underlying movement problem.
Before final payment, compare the result with the agreed boundary, including cleanup and debris removal. Keep the estimate, paint information and invoice for future touch-ups or a callback. A concise scope makes a small job easier to evaluate than a low headline price followed by a list of additions.
Questions people ask
Does a small hole mean a cheap finished repair?
Not always. Setup, access, drying, return visits and repainting can take more work than filling the opening itself. Ask what finishing stage the price includes.
Is $197.50 a published patch price?
No. It is a labeled calculation using an assumed 2-hour visit and $50 supplies with Show-Me's published labor rate and material markup. The repair duration and supply cost need a job estimate.
Why charge for more than one visit?
Products and site conditions may require drying between stages. Separate minimum charges can affect the bill, but a flat quote may already include all return visits.
Can painting be limited to the patch?
It can, if that is the result you agree to buy. A whole-wall repaint is a larger scope and may be needed for the desired appearance; state the boundary before booking.
